Roux was the angel-dog Taylar didn’t know she needed. Then her constant companion and traveling buddy saved her life.
I have always told my dog, Roux, that I think he’s an angel sent from heaven — ever since he first came home with me from the municipal shelter in New York City, a skinny one-year-old dog.
It wasn’t until a little over five years together that I realized how accurate his “angel from heaven” nickname really was. In July 2018, on our usual morning walk, Roux saved my life. Out of nowhere, I was attacked by a complete stranger in broad daylight. While other dogs (or even other people) might run in the face of danger, Roux ran toward my attacker and herded him away from me, putting himself in the direct line of the attack. In some sort of miraculous turn of events, another passerby then appeared and helped me rescue Roux from the assailant.
Without Roux that day, I may not be alive. His bravery in the face of danger is amazing, not to mention that he managed to save me without harming another. The police even nicknamed him “Handsome Hero.”
For anyone who is unsure about adoption — unsure about how an adult dog or a dog with an unknown past may react when in their new home — I believe my years of experience with Roux, who also happened to be my first dog as an independent adult, is evidence that the experience can be absolutely amazing.
